UBS Global Asset Management Reports Sharp Decline in U.S. Pension Fund Fitness in 4Q2007 Due to Lower Equity Markets and Lower Interest Rates
UBS Global Asset Management Reports Sharp Decline in U.S. Pension Fund Fitness in 4Q2007
UBS
3 Jan 2008 United States Investment - General, Funding and Minimum Funding Requirement
UBS Global Asset Management's US Pension Fund Fitness Tracker has shown that the typical US pension fund started the fourth quarter of 2007 with a funding ratio of approximately 109% and ended the quarter weaker at approximately 101%. This decrease was due to volatile equity markets that ended the quarter down, thus decreasing the value of the asset pool from which plan participants' benefits are paid, and lower interest rates which increased the present value of pension liabilities.

UBS Global Asset Management has announced that its US Pension Fund Fitness Tracker, a quarterly estimate of the overall health of a typical US defined benefit pension plan, shows pension funding ratios fell 4% in the third quarter of 2007, to approximately 110%. While the funding ratio is still above 100%, the significant drop, due in large part to falling interest rates, continues to be a concern for plan sponsors and fund managers.
