No need to panic about pensions
Rising productivity will outweigh negative influence of ageing population, says report
Tomorrow's Company
31 Oct 2005 United Kingdom Pension Reform, Advisers
According to a report from independent business-led think tank Tomorrow's Company, there is no pensions crisis and, as a society, we can afford to grow old. In particular, the report argues the so-called “dependency ratio” of working to non-working people in the future has been misconceived. Critically, rising productivity will offset the effects of an ageing population and make a decent universal state pension practical, says the research. The key, therefore, is not addressing a supposed “savings gap” but pursuing economic policies which promote productivity, growth and wealth creation.

The report warns that the only way for the UK investment system to deliver better value to its customers is for concerted and collective action by the industry itself, starting with a high level statement of what it stands for.
