Final European private equity and venture capital returns for the year ending 31-December-2002 remain solid with an annualised net pooled internal rate of return (‘IRR’) of 10.8% for all private equity. This long term IRR is measured for the 23 years since fund inception of 31-December-1979. This compares with short-term returns, (measured using one and three-year horizon IRRs) of –9.2% and +4.1% respectively.

According to this study, South Korean venture capital funds disbursed US$78.8m during the first six months of 2002 and US$1.4bn for the year 2001. The data shows that one new venture capital firm and 15 new funds were established in the first six months to 30 June 2002. In 2001, a total of two new firms and 47 new funds were identified.
