According to a report by the Pew Center on the States, the shortfall between the promises states have made for public employees’ retirement benefits and the money allocated to pay for them increased by 26% to $1.26trn in 2009. Pension funding deficits accounted for $660bn of the gap with the funding status of state pension plans falling from 84% in 2008 to 78% in 2009.
