According to a report from RSM, the pensions sector is beginning to recognise that fraud and IT systems breaches are areas of increasing risk. The findings revealed that 52% of respondents said that fraud is a significant threat to the pensions sector, compared to 41% in 2016.

Research by RSM has revealed that almost a third of pension schemes have been affected by fraud, with victims experiencing a threefold increase in scams in the last 12 months alone. The survey found that among those schemes that had experienced fraud, 51% had been victims in the last 12 months, while 17% had been victims of scams between 12 to 24 months ago.

According to RSM's Pension Fraud Risk Report, one third of pension schemes reported that they had experienced fraud in 2015, more than double the proportion in 2013. The findings also revealed that 26% of trustees did not know that they are responsible for fraud detection and prevention.
