ESG risk in default funds: Analysis of the UK's DC pension market
ESG risk in default funds: Analysis of the UK's DC pension market
Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) and Sustainalytics
Feb 2017 United Kingdom Industry Bodies (excl. Regulatory Bodies), Investment - Ethical and SRI, Scheme Design (inc. DB & DC)
The PLSA has published a report by Sustainalytics analysing environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) risks facing the UK's DC pension market. The report finds that human capital is the biggest source of ESG risk at the companies in which DC default funda are invested. Climate change risks are also substantial, affecting the highest number of industries in which a typical DC default fund is invested. The report recommends that pension schemes adopt a three-pronged strategy to manage ESG issues, including exploring the use of passive ESG products in default funds, incorporating ESG factors into their global equity allocation model and developing a forceful stewardship strategy that includes a platform to engage with investee companies on ESG issues.
