Ageing and Mortality in the UK - National Statistician's annual article on the population
Ageing and Mortality in the UK
National Statistics
9 Dec 2008 United Kingdom Pensioners & Retirement, Long-term Care
According to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the population of the UK is growing at the fastest rate since the 1960s, increasing on average by 0.5% each year. The fastest growing age group is those aged 85 years and older, who now represent just over 2% of the population, compared to just over 1% in 1982. In 2007, continued increase in the population over state pension age meant for the first time this sub-group of the population exceeded the number aged under 16. Further improvements in survival mean both the continued growth of the older population and the likely continued ageing of the population as a whole.

New ONS publication will inform pensions debate
"Pension Trends" - a statistical backdrop to pensions issues
National Statistics
27 Oct 2005 United Kingdom Savings, Investment - General
According to the new "Pension Trends" publication from the Office of National Statistics, two thirds of working age people think that putting money into a pension scheme is the most secure way of saving for retirement – yet less than half are contributing to any form of pension other than the state pension. People in their 40s are most likely to be contributing: 62% of all men and 47% of all women in the 45 to 49 age band were saving in an occupational or personal pension in 2003-04. In addition, the nature of pension provision has changed in recent years. The proportion of employees who are saving in salary related (defined benefit) schemes fell from 45 to 42% between 1998 and 2004, and in money purchase (defined contribution) schemes from 9 to 8%, but this was offset by a rise from 1 to 6% in those with group personal pensions arranged through their employer.
