20 Aug 2007 United Kingdom Surpluses and Deficits, Scheme Issues & Trends, Funding and Minimum Funding Requirement

Many schemes still face significant pension deficit volatility as a result of mis-matches between assets and liabilities, according to Mercer Human Resource Consulting. Although the de-risking of defined benefit pension schemes continues, Mercer’s FTSE 350 Pension Scheme Survey shows that for the most exposed 5% of the FTSE 350, the median impact of a 1-in-20 year adverse event (eg a major collapse in equity markets combined with low interest rates) could reduce their market cap by at least 12%.

More and more Americans are getting a socially responsible investment (SRI) option in their defined contribution (DC) plans at work, according to new Mercer Investing Consulting data released by the Social Investment Forum, which commissioned the research. The survey finds that 19% of DC plans already include a SRI option and that 41% of all DC plan sponsors are not currently offering SRI options to investors but expect to be doing so within three years. This would translate to 60% market penetration for SRI options in DC retirement plans by 2010. A total of 129 US plan sponsors, 16 DC plan administrators and 38 consultants participated in the survey, entitled “Defined Contribution Plans and Socially Responsible Investing in the United States".

According to Mercer Investment Consulting’s Pooled Fund Survey, the Canadian pooled balanced pension fund median return was 1.7% for the first quarter of 2007, in line with long-term expectations. “Most pension plans in Canada would have seen little change by the end of the quarter in the financial position compared to the end of 2006,” said Peter Muldowney, business leader for Mercer Investment Consulting in Canada. “Both the assets and the liabilities are likely to have grown by a similar amount.”

2 Nov 2006 Ireland Trustees, Scheme Issues & Trends, Scheme Design (inc. DB & DC), Investment - Management, Investment - General
An extensive survey of Irish pension plan trustees and sponsors’ attitudes across a range of investment issues has been launched by Mercer Investment Consulting. The findings of the survey indicate an increased focus on risk management. The study also found that over two thirds of defined benefit plans fail to meet long term fully funded status and approximately 50% of respondents believe that attempting to better match pension liabilities/increasing bonds is a key priority. The findings also suggest that total employee and employer contributions into Defined Contribution (DC) plans have increased from three years ago, with over 3/4 of respondents saying they pay in excess of 10% into their plans.
