According to this report, 2004 has turned out to be a far more satisfactory year for all those engaged in the Annual General Meeting process. The proportion of shares voted rose from an average 52% to 57% with UK and North American institutional shareholders typically voting around three quarters of their holdings. Individuals voted around a quarter of their shares and the institutional vote from other geographic regions was much lower.

US Institutional Investors give Securities Reforms Mixed Reviews
US institutional investors' attitudes to US and EU securities reform

This research is based on interviews with 22 US institutions who collectively manage over US$2.5 trillion in assets and who are amongst the leading US investors in foreign stocks. The findings reveal that US institutional investors are unimpressed with the part of the new Sarbanes-Oxley securities regulations which require CEOs and CFOs to sign their companies' financial statements. Instead, they are focused much more on the regulations' tighter control of disclosure and corporate governance.
