According to research by the Local Authority Pension Fund Forum (LAPFF), 23% of companies in the FTSE 350 do not adequately report the activities of their audit committees. The Local Authority Pension Fund Forum (LAPFF) has launched a challenge to the UK fund management industry: the takeover of shareholder activism by fund managers without critical oversight by their pension fund clients should stop. The new report, “Shareholder Engagement: Holding Fund Managers to Account”, contains a LAPFF Trustee Guide which encourages pension schemes to conduct a dialogue with their fund managers on how effective their engagement activities are in bringing about change at companies and creating value in the long-term.

This survey of 55 pension funds reveals how far many funds rely on their asset managers to achieve best practice on shareholder activism. A comparative survey of nine of their main fund managers found a high degree of compliance with best practice guidelines. However, a number of gaps were revealed in best practice on engagement between them and their clients.
