Nearly a quarter of Britons (23%) can no longer afford to retire at the time they had planned, according to new research from Life Trust Insurance. As many as one in ten (12%) adults currently working stated that, in the light of the current economic crisis, they now expect to have to delay their retirement by as much as five years. A further 8% expect to delay by between two and four years and 3% expect to put off leaving the workforce by a year.

According to new research from Life Trust, retirement costs an individual living alone £326,700 and a couple £413,000. This figure rises to £708,500 if a person lives until they reach 100 and also notes that if a person takes early retirement at 50 they will need an additional £373,000, or around £25,000 per year. The costs are based on a long-term forecasted inflation rate of 2.3%.

People across the UK are massively underestimating how long they will live, according to research released by Life Trust Insurance plc. As greater longevity is increasingly becoming a fact of life, people are leaving themselves vulnerable to financial hardship at a time when they are most in need.
