A survey from Irwin Mitchell has revealed that a third of UK companies that have implemented auto-enrolment would approach it differently if they had the chance to do it again. The survey results also found that half of the larger companies already complying with auto-enrolment rules wish that they had given themselves more time to prepare.

Research into the readiness of SMEs for auto-enrolment by Irwin Mitchell has found that many are at risk of receiving fines for non-compliance. The study revealed that almost 60% of companies have not budgeted for the additional costs that can be incurred as a result of auto-enrolment, whilst 40% said that their payroll system was not compliant.

According to Irwin Mitchell's latest Business Intelligence Report, 53.7% of the 421 companies questioned said that they would welcome a return of the ability to automatically retire staff members when they reach a certain age. Of those who would like to see the reintroduction of the default retirement age, 60% would set it between the ages of 61 and 65 while 24% would set it at 66 to 70.
