Research carried out by Investment Management Association (IMA) has revealed that pension funds are experiencing investment problems caused by disruption in the sterling corporate bond market in the period following the credit crisis. The report warns that the market is at risk of becoming a 'backwater', creating an obstacle to market participation for pension funds, and proposes a number of actions to help support recovery of the sterling corporate bond market.

IMA publishes sixth asset management survey
IMA publishes sixth asset management survey
Investment Management Association (IMA)
8 Aug 2008 United Kingdom Investment - Performance, Investment - General
The Investment Management Association's (IMA) sixth asset management survey has shown that in the UK institutional market as at December 2007, equities account for 44% (2006: 49%) and bonds for 38% (2006: 35%). The findings also found that there is continued diversification both out of equities into other asset classes (with a particular interest in alternatives) and out of UK equities towards global mandates. Within the actively managed part of the institutional market, companies report a focus on unconstrained and absolute return strategies. The outlook for defined benefit (DB) schemes has not improved, said the survey, and a particular concern is proposed changes to accounting standards, which might result in the risk-free rate being used to report pension liabilities under FRS17.
