According to the IPE European Institutional Asset Management Survey 2009, European pension funds have altered their investment behaviour from being long term to risk-averse, short term with a focus on fixing their deficits by the dates set by regulators. The survey of 117 investors also revealed that they regard "investment horizon" as the most important factor in the management of their in-house assets.

The latest findings of  IPE's annual Top 1000 supplement show that assets under management of the top 750 continental European pension funds, including those in Ireland and Iceland, and the top 250 in the UK, rose to €3.02 trillion in 2005 from the previous year's €2.63 trillion.
