The Intergenerational Commission has published a report on the challenges faced by the individual and the state as a result of people living longer. According to the report, if the state pension age based dependency ratio were to rise to its 2060 level today (with an old age threshold of 69) the tax burden on those of working age would increase by £15bn - equivalent to a 4p rise in the basic rate of income tax.
