GovernanceMetrics International (GMI)
Feb 2004 Europe (including EU), United States Corporate Governance
In this study, 22 companies (18 American, two British, one Australian and one Canadian) received scores of 10.0, the researcher's highest rating. As a group, these companies outperformed the S&P 500 Index as measured by average total returns for each of the last one, three and five year periods by 3.0%, 9.4% and 6.9% respectively. The researcher says this suggests a correlation between corporate governance and portfolio returns when measured across a number of variables and across a multi-year period.
