According to a survey commissioned by the independent financial advisory company Gazelle Pensions Advisory, over a third of pension trustee boards (35%) do not presently seek any independent advice on employer covenant issues and few of these expect to do so in the future. The study found that half of the trustee boards of the UK’s largest pension schemes are concerned about the impact of a future takeover on their employer’s covenant, with 30% saying they are more fearful than five years ago. The main worries are from acquisitions by private equity firms and foreign-based businesses centred outside the EU.
