The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) has published its 2017 Market Development Report of the occupational pensions market and cross-border activities of Institutions for Occupational Retirement Provisions (IORPs) in the European Economic Area. According to the report, the number of active cross-border IORPs has remained at the level of the previous years (73 at the end of 2016), however, more IORPs are expanding their cross-border activities in additional host countries.

The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) has published the result of a EU-wide stress test exercise of Institutions for Occupational Retirement Provisions (IORPs). The exercise involved 236 insurance undertakings at the solo level from 30 European countries, with market coverage of 77% in terms of the relevant business (life technical provisions excluding health and unit linked) and included medium- and small-sized undertakings.

The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) has published its June 2016 report on financial stability in the (re)insurance and occupational pension fund sectors of the European Economic Area (EEA). Total assets held by occupational pension funds in the EEA increased by 14% in 2015 following a more moderate growth of 11% in 2014. The report also shows that the ongoing low interest rate environment continues to generate challenges to the European occupational pension fund sector.

The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) has published a report which aims to map out the available choices that members of occupational DC pension schemes have in the European context regarding investment in their retirement plans. The results show that in 4 out of 10 member states, information on costs, risks and rewards of different investment options available in case of free choice management is actively provided to scheme members. However, in 3 out of 10 member states, the same information is only available on request.

The report reveals that economic conditions in European countries remain fragile and that both insurance and occupational pension sectors still face risks from three main areas - a prolonged low yield environment, a weak macroeconomic climate and a possible contagion risk arising from exposure to sovereigns and financial institutions.

The study is the first EU assessment of the financial situation of pension funds and reveals a wide dispersion in impacts of the holistic balance sheet, ranging from surpluses in some member states to large deficits in others. The results reinforce the need to continue working towards a European regulatory regime for pension funds that is market-consistent and risk-based.
