Rethinking retirement income strategies: how can we secure better outcomes for future retirees
Rethinking retirement income strategies: how can we secure better outcomes for future retirees
European Fund and Asset Management Association (EFAMA)
18 Feb 2009 Europe (including EU) Investment - General, European Union members, European Union issues, Annuities and Income Drawdown
According to a report from the European Fund and Asset Management Association (EFAMA), the requirement to convert accumulated pension assets into an annuity at retirement or shortly after is very expensive for pensioners. The study argues that the best investment strategy in retirement is to hold a significant proportion of pension assets in equity early on in retirement and to change progressively to bonds and annuities over time. The authors of the report suggest that if annuities remain compulsory, then the upper age limit for compulsory annuitisation should be increased towards 85 in order to achieve a proper balance between the objectives of securing a sufficient level of retirement income and protecting retirees from longevity risk as they reach advanced ages.
