Spain Speeds Up Implementation of New Corporate Governance Rules

The Spanish Government has advanced the implementation schedule for a set of new mandatory corporate governance rules for listed companies. Following the Transparency Law of July 2003, the rules were initially to take effect one and two years later, i.e. in July 2004 and 2005. However, the growing concern in Europe after the Parmalat case together with the slow pace of voluntary compliance by Spanish listed companies with international corporate governance standards have convinced the government of the need to accelerate reform.
