According to a survey by the trustee magazine Engaged Investor in association with Pension Corporation, 62% of UK occupational pension fund trustees believe that the ever-increasing pensions expertise they are now required to have means that they should receive payment for their role. The study, which ran from January to March 2010, is one of the largest independent studies yet conducted.

A survey conducted by Engaged Investor magazine has revealed that reducing deficits is the top priority for local government pension schemes. Local government pension schemes provide retirement income for 4 million people in the UK, but with some schemes as much as 40% under-funded,  reducing the gap was shown to be the top priority of 51% of those surveyed. In terms of risk, 34% of schemes believe the biggest investment risk they face is of managers underperforming, while 32% believe poor asset allocation decisions pose a more serious risk.

Survey of FTSE 350 company pension schemes

A survey by Engaged Investor in partnership with Merrill Lynch Investment Managers of trustees from FTSE350 company pension schemes has revealed that only 32% believe they understand investment principles "very well". Only 22% rated their understanding of trust and pensions law highly but 88% of trustees said they planned to attend training courses next year.
