The findings show that the average time since any job transition in the over 50s is more than three times as long as it is for those under 30, suggesting that many careers are likely to plateau or stagnate as people get older.

A survey from the Employers Forum on Age (EFA) of nearly 200 human resource management professionals undermines the argument that there are benefits to business when workers are forced to retire at 65. The survey found that almost two-thirds (64%) of employers who operate a mandatory retirement age (MRA) agree that it can lead to a loss of valuable knowledge and talent.

Twelve months after the introduction of legislation making age discrimination unlawful, awareness of the rules has almost doubled to become widespread, yet new research commissioned by The Employers Forum on Age (EFA) has found that employers are still not abiding by the law. While 86% of people know it is illegal to discriminate on the grounds of age at work, 16 million (59%) workers claim to have witnessed ageist behaviour in the workplace during the last twelve months alone.

Research from the Employers Forum on Age (EFA) (in association with Procter & Gamble) reveals that ageism is still alive and well in British workplaces, with almost six million people (12% of respondents) saying they have seen ageist behaviour in their own workplace since the laws came into force. Moreover, a fifth (20%) of Britons say that age has stood in the way of them getting a job.

With only three months to go until anti age discrimination laws come into force the public is still in the dark as to what ageism is, according to the Employers Forum on Age's (EFA) latest report, "Defining Ageism". This confusion could lead to added headaches for employers and an increase in employment tribunals. The report found that older respondents tend to have a greater awareness of the forthcoming legislation, with 75% of 55-64 year olds being aware of the age discrimination legislation compared with 43% of 16-24 year-olds. The EFA feel that this reflects the media’s focus on how the legislation will affect older people.

A survey carried out by the Employers Forum on Age (EFA) has found that 40 per cent of  UK employers expect the forthcoming age legislation to have a greater impact than sex and race discrimination laws. Retirement was one of the employers' greatest concerns with 60% of those questioned believing that the new legislation will make the process of employee retirement more difficult, although 80% felt that opportunities for older workers will be increased.

Attitudes to work, retirement and pensions are not linked to age, according to new research from the Employers Forum on Age (EFA). Its report, "Attitude not Age", reveals that the Government needs to wake up to people’s aspirations and work life experiences in order to influence pension saving and retirement decisions. The report suggests a "one-size-fits-all" approach by the Government and employers to tackle working for longer and retirement will be ineffective. The EFA’s research reveals four types of worker (Rooster, Workhorse, Sheepdog and Cat), whose attitudes are determined less by their age than their education, skills and the type of work they’re doing.
