An annual report by the Investment Company Institute (ICI) and the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) has revealed an increase in the use of balanced funds, including target date funds, by recently hired 401(k) plan participants compared to 15 years ago. The research also found that the year-end 2013 average 401(k) account balance was 13.2% higher than the previous year.

The Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) and the Investment Company Institute (ICI) have published a report entitled "401(k) Participants in the Wake of the Financial Crisis: Changes in Account Balances, 2007-2011". The research found that the average 401(k) account balance for individuals consistently participating in their 401(k) plans between year-end 2007 and year-end 2011 increased by 23.5% over that period.
