Tenth report: Welfare to work: tackling the barriers to the employment of older people
PAC Tenth report
Committee of Public Accounts
24 May 2005 United Kingdom Savings, Pensioners & Retirement

The Committee has published its 10th Report of the 2004–05 Session, examining the Government’s efforts to help older people find work. The Government aims to help a broad range of people to overcome barriers in finding employment and since 1998 has spent over £800 million on helping the over-50s. Around 2.7 million people between 50 and state pension age are not working. Between 700,000 and 1 million would like to work, 200,000 of whom are actively seeking employment. The barriers to work include age discrimination, lack of qualifications and skills, and health conditions or disability.
