A new report on pensions outlines how voluntary savings in funded pensions are key to overcoming the pensions crisis in the European Union. While a complete switch to funded pension provision would be neither feasible nor desirable, European insurers urge national governments and EU policymakers to encourage saving in funded private pensions as a supplement to public state pensions. Many actions have already been undertaken, but more needs to and can be done to foster saving via private pensions by means of providing accurate and easily understood information, intensifying financial education, providing fiscal incentives and ensuring balanced consumer protection. Moreover, a level playing-field amongst all competitors should be guaranteed.
