Citibank's latest research shows there are now around 1,840,000 semi or fully retired people aged 55 and over who already rely, or will rely, on the government pension as their primary source of income. This is not limited to poor savers or those on lower incomes.

Findings from the second Citibank Retirement Index reveal that 19% of Australia's over 55 semi and fully retired population, have ignored advice to plan for retirement. This figure rises to 21% of retirees over 65 who have yet to start saving for retirement but drops to 16% of 55-64 year olds.

The "Citibank Retirement Index" has revealed further findings of its inaugural look at Australia's retirement landscape. The stark reality is that spending cut-backs are a fundamental fact of life for the majority of Australian retirees. Two out of three retirees have been forced to reduce their personal expenditure in the last three months. Launched on 1 August and tracked every six months, the Citibank Retirement Index aims to produce a comprehensive snapshot of retirement that can act as a learning tool for future generations.
