16 Sep 2010 United Kingdom Longevity
UK managers are 'woefully unprepared' to deal with an ageing workforce, research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has found. Only 14% of UK managers consider their organisation well prepared to cope with demographic changes that mean a third of UK workers will be aged over 50 by 2020. More than a third of the respondents (34%) also claimed that board-level recognition of ageing workforce issues is non-existent. However, 93% of managers recognise that older workers bring valuable knowledge to organisations, and only 11% suggested older workers cost their organisation more money. The study, entitled 'Managing an Ageing Workforce', develops recommendations to help organisations maximise the contribution and retention of their older workers.
