Report on Investment Activity 2002
Analysis of UK private equity investment activity
BVCA
May 2003 United Kingdom Investment - Venture Capital & Private Equity
Private equity investments held up well in 2002, despite the difficult overall market and trading conditions and lack of exit routes. Whilst investment totals were down from 2001 levels, nearly 1,500 companies were financed in 2002 and the overall amount invested by UK private equity firms reached almost 5.5 billion. Just under half of these companies were in the high technology industries, although the amount of investment into high technology fell. Not unexpectedly, fund raising suffered in 2002 with funds raised totalling 7.8 billion, down 43% from the all-time record set in 2001 of 13.6 billion.
