Retiring Thoughts
Individuals' and Organisations' responses to questions about retirement
Bernard Hodes
Oct 2002 United Kingdom Pensioners & Retirement
This report is based on research among the general public, graduates and HR professionals across the UK. The sample comprises 1000 people, with 80% coming from the general public of which 85% work full-time and 15% work part-time. Interviewees were aged between 18 and 65. The remaining 20% are under-graduates aged between 18 and 22. In both instances there is an even gender split. In addition, 25 human resource professionals, representing both the private and public sectors, completed questions about their organisations' responses to retirement and older workers. The findings show that British people still dream of early retirement, setting their ideal age for taking at just 54. However, the overwhelming majority believe that they will, reluctantly, have to work longer than ever to provide sufficient income in retirement. In the past year, almost a third have revised their planned retirement to a later date as a result of the pensions crisis and over half say they are now worried about their financial futures.
