Research conducted by Aviva Investors has found that pension sponsors have invested more than £500bn into their defined benefit (DB) pension schemes since the year 2000, and deficits have increased by around the same amount, from £250bn that year to over £900bn in 2015. For the first time, UK private sector DB schemes collectively have liabilities of over £2trn, significantly in excess of the UK’s GDP of £1.8trn.

Analysis from Aviva Investors has found that the long-term investment performance of pension funds could have improved by up to 3.5% per year if trustees had applied forward looking and dynamic asset allocation to pension portfolios, rather than managing portfolios in a more static way.
