95% of respondents to the first Association of British Insurers (ABI) Savings and Protection survey believe the economic environment has deteriorated over the past 12 months. The results reveal a marked deterioration in sentiment from other recent surveys conducted by the ABI in mid April, late June and early September. There was a 10% rise in the proportion of those who think the economic environment has ‘worsened a lot’ in the late September survey compared to the early September survey.

New economic research into the annuities market shows that 85% of single life level annuity customers receive a rate that is at least 95% of the highest rate available. The research shows the market delivers good rates for most customers – including many of those who do not change provider.

Life and pensions new business figures for the second quarter of 2007 have been published by the Association of British Insurers (ABI). Total Annual Premium Equivalent (APE) new business was £4.503bn, an increase of 10.7% from £4.068bn in Q2 2006.

In this paper, the ABI urges the government to consider further incentives to boost pension saving in the workplace. The Budget for Savers sets out a series of practical and affordable proposals to help UK workers save more for retirement through the workplace. The two key proposals are an "Advice Credit" and a "Pension Contribution Tax Credit" to help reduce the savings gap.
