The PPI, sponsored by Which? magazine, has published a report entitled 'Charges, returns and transparency in DC - what can we learn from other countries?'. The report compares data for DC workplace pensions from Australia, the United States, the Netherlands and Sweden to explore workplace pension charges and allow analysis of whether, on a global level, UK charges are high or low, transparent and offer good investment returns. The report examines the level of disclosed costs and charges in each country in the context of the country’s pensions system, the investment returns achieved and also the transparency and effectiveness of the governance oversight of charging.

According to Mercer, the estimated aggregate funding level of S&P 1500 pension plans decreased by 2% during October to 90%, principally as a result of a decrease in equity markets. The analysis also shows that as of 31 October 2018, the estimated aggregate deficit of S&P 1500 pension plans was $208bn, up from $171bn at the end of September.

According to the findings, average 401(k) plan account balances for consistent participants increased by 122% across the period from year-end 2010 to year-end 2016.

ICI Global has published the latest edition of its Defined Contribution Plan Participants' Activities study, looking at contributions, withdrawals and other activities undertaken by participants in DC plans during the first quarter of 2018, based upon DC plan recordkeeper data covering more than 30 million participant accounts in employer-based DC plans. According to the study, nearly all DC plan participants continued to make contributions, and only 1.3% made withdrawals. The study also found that loan activity decreased during the first quarter of 2018, continuing a seasonal pattern observed by ICI over the past several years.
