The results of this study show that the level of investment in high tech companies backed by venture capital funds was the highest since Q4 2000. At least $347m was raised by high tech companies in the third quarter of 2004. This represents a 6% increase over the previous quarter ($326m) and a 83% increase over the same quarter last year ($190m). So far this year has registered at least $927m in capital raised while all of 2003 saw only $768m raised.

The positive trend in the Israeli venture market continued in 2004’s third quarter. 113 Israeli high tech companies raised $438 million from venture investors, both local and foreign. The amount was up 30% from the $338 million raised by 91 companies in the previous quarter and was 55% higher than the $283 million raised by 103 companies in the third quarter of 2003. The amount raised in the first three quarters of 2004 reflects an increase of 43% from the same period in 2003.

The results of this study show that high tech companies backed by venture capital funds raised at least $326m in the second quarter of 2004, a 28% increase over the previous quarter ($255m) and a 34% increase as compared to the corresponding quarter in 2003 ($243m). This quarter showed a 15% decrease in the number of companies who raised capital (70 as compared to 82 in the previous quarter). The average investment in a company during the quarter was $4.7m, a 52% increase as compared to the previous quarter ($3.1m).

The level of investment in high tech companies backed by venture capital funds in the fourth quarter of 2003 was similar to the level recorded in the previous quarter, both in the volume of investments (in monetary terms) and in the volume of transactions. According to the survey, 74 high tech companies raised $192 million during the quarter, compared to $190 milion invested in 76 companies in the previous quarter). The average investment in each company was $2.6m.

In the first quarter of 2004, 111 Israeli high tech companies raised $323 million from venture investors, both local and foreign. The amount was up 31% from the $246 million raised by 96 companies in the previous quarter and 53% higher than the $211 million raised by 86 companies in the first quarter of 2003. The average company financing round increased by 13% from the previous quarter and 18% from the first quarter of 2003 to $2.9 million. 67 companies attracted more than $1 million. Of these, 11 companies each raised between $5 million and $10 million and ten companies each raised more than $10 million.

Capital raised by Israeli VCs takes a positive turn

According to this research, a positive turnaround has occurred in capital raising by Israeli VCs. In 2003, capital raised by Israeli venture capital firms was $118 million, netting $28 million. The latter amount derives mostly from $46 million raised by Evergreen for a fourth fund (of $141 million); $25 million raised by Vitalife (of a $50 million fund); $5 million by Star Ventures’ SVE X fund; $14 million by JVPs’ Annex Fund, JVP III; $4 million by Infinity’s Annex fund and returned capital of $90 million ($70 million by Jerusalem Global Ventures and an estimated $20 million by Challenge Fund). The positive net amount raised in 2003 is in contrast to 2002’s net of -$145 million.
